MNYC 2009 Highlights!

Justine, Leah, Leah, Katie, and Lydia

  • We spent one week in Milwaukee, WI with 500 college students.  Our theme of “Rest”, which comes from what Jesus says in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” was enriching to us personally and to many students as we explored a lot of different topics together.  It was full of late nights and lots of conversations! Katie stayed with two freshman: Leah E. and Leah B. and a senior, Justine.  Nick stayed with three men: Jake, Larry, and Luke.

Nick and Jake H.

· “Praise the Lord! Our room was filled with honesty, vulnerability, tears over sin and suffering in our lives, joy over the forgiveness through Christ in our lives, and lots of laughter and fun!”  – Katie

· “I wore a lot of hats at the conference with all of the planning and getting around students.  By God’s grace, the conference ran really smoothly and I was able to get a lot of one-on-one’s with students to read the bible alongside the administrative responsibilities as well.”  - Nick

· Katie shared a personal testimony during our women’s breakout of her identity struggle as a woman and how it relates to physical appearance/being thin. She sang a song she has been writing as she has wrestled through this struggle.

Pray Like Jesus

[marshillchurch.org]

I was impacted by this message from Mark Driscoll on prayer.

God the Holy Spirit enables us to pray
- He dwells in us to teach us to be prayerful
– Generally , as Christians, our prayers are to be Trinitarian, to the father, through the Son, by the spirit
§ Pray to God as Father … “Our Father who art in heaven …”
§ Romans 8:15 “You Christians have received the spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry abba, or daddy – Father
□ We should respectively but need to pray formally
□ God is a loving father …
□ Dad loves me, dad cares,
- Prayer isnt telling God something he doesn’t know.

“Most of the time prayer is to change our heart, not to move the hand of God.”

paradigm shift regarding when the Lord will return

I was talking with a student after church this weekend about what will happen when we die, more specifically when God is coming back.

It struck me that I always seem to want things: now. I am not patient whatsoever. It’s interesting reading in the ESV Study Bible the following note from 2 Peter 3

- “The Lords patience Determines the timing of his return. The Lord’s perspective on time is different from that of humans. It is not that God is slow in fulfilling his promise, but rather that he is patient.”

I forget that God is on a totally different scale of time than what I operate on daily. And His scale is perfect, mine is not! Amen.

post voting thoughts

this was the hardest vote I ever cast. voting for more than what i deep down inside wanted to vote for. I really liked Obama and what he represented, but couldnt fathom the thought of chance of more innocent babies being killed.

This post shows a glimpse of the being torn:
