We spent a weekend at Camp Shamineau with students who will be leading our Summer Training Project. Below, meet our Room Leaders, Team Leaders, A- Team, and Student Project Directors! Quite the lovely bunch, no? So, the funny thing about being a leader as a Christian is… that… its totally not like the cultural perception of “leader.” In a lot of ways, a leader seems like someone who has it all together, someone who has reached a certain level of expertise, someone who does a great job at a lot of things and is able to tell other people what to do. But, for the believer, the bible compares being a leader to being servant-hearted and full of humility, rather than seeking power and dominance. One of the goals we pitched to our student leaders was this: To fail and fail publicly. Sort of a weird angle to throw at our leaders… but, let’s roll with it. Its not some cruel joke to want them to fail in public so people can point fingers and laugh. What it is getting at is that the believer is FREE to fail. And its OK to share the ways you fall short in front of the students you are leading. It creates some of the best teachable moments that could radically help the student disciples going. If the cross is big for a leader, its big for their followers. If the cross is small for a leader, the followers will likely not see the beauty of grace and the glorious truth than in light of our falling short of God’s glory, we are freed by the gift of Jesus life and death. For the believer, failure is…oddly enough… the most powerful way God can use you. Pray for us personally, our staff team and student leaders to cling to this promise in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

I have struggled with drinking and partying since I was 16, but at college I began to feel that what I thought would be more exciting was becoming more and more empty. I felt trapped in the cycle of desperately trying to fill the gaping hole in my life with alcohol, guys, my outward appearance, the approval of others and whatever else I could use to escape from my depressing reality.

However, God was working in my life even in this time. One night Katie Stromwall was in Territorial Hall and happened to come into my dorm. My roommate and I like her right away and were inspired by her transparency and love for us, even though we hardly knew her. Kate left for training for quite awhile but had been praying the entire time that God would move in T-hall. Meanwhile, I remained in my empty cycle, feeling more and more low each weekend.

One night I was reading my bible in a flailing and despairing attempt to feel at peace with God and I opened randomly to 1Peter 3:5, “You’ve already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it’s time to be done with it for good.” The verse jumped of the page as if God was in the room directly speaking to me. I was so convicted and although a part of me wanted to hold on to my life the way it was, a greater part of me was so weary that being done with partying “for good” sounded like a breath of fresh air. But I was still trapped and didn’t know what to do with my new revelation. For four days I pushed it aside, until my mom called me about my little sister, Erin. Anorexia held Erin in captivity and my family had to helplessly watch her become more of a lifeless corpse and less of the beautiful and vibrant girl we knew.

This call from my mom though, was not more bad news this time. She had called to tell me that God had broken through to Erin, that she wanted help. When I went to visit, saw Jesus in her. She was a completely different person, although still frail and withered away, her eyes where full of life and passion as she shared with me how God had rescued her. She spoke of living in the light, openly sharing her deepest struggles with me. I was so inspired by the change in her that I felt moved to share my struggle with my mom and her. I showed them the verse God had given me and we all wept for joy at God’s amazing love and perfect timing.

We prayed together and for the first time, were real with each other. Since this point God has had me to stay. He graciously took away my desire for alcohol. Day by day, as I long for more of God the things that used to matter to me fall away. Katie and other girls in Campus Outreach have been the biggest blessing and have loved me so well and stretched me in my walk with God. This year has not been easy, but it has been good. God is doing amazing things in my life and in the lives of other girls here at the U of M. I am so humbled to see him use, me an extremely flawed servant, for his glory.”

We just got home from our leader’s retreat! We had about 55 students from the U of M come together to talk about vision for how to love, serve, and come alongside the people on our campus. We get a glimpse of what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus after his death when his disciples set out on a mission to make this amazing gift of salvation through Christ known in the cities and contexts in which they were living. It is amazing to see how the apostles of Jesus became faithful laborers from one city to another, proclaiming the reality of Jesus to many who had never heard of his mercy and salvation. In spite of suffering and persecution, in spite of sin in the church, and in spite of conflict, the church continued to grow. It grew in the context of remarkable love among the Christians in Jerusalem, frequent miracles, and the courageous proclamation of the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit. The word of God continued to increase in spite of widespread opposition. Many people became Christians. The lower ranks of the priesthood numbered in the thousands, of whom many were poor and may have first been attracted to Christians by their charity, under the guidance of the newly appointed deacons. The acts of the apostles’ lives were documented in the book of Acts in the bible, where we read in Acts 6:7: “And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.”

There would not be any students in the picture above if the reality of Acts 6:7 was not possible. If the word of God did not continue to increase and if Jesus’ disciples never multiplied or became obedient to faith in Jesus Christ, there would not be a Campus Outreach staff team and there would not be 55 students from the U of M desiring the word of God to increase on their campus.

Two Campus Outreach Indianapolis staff team guys, Brett Barnes and Patrick Lewis, flew into Minneapolis to tell our students in Minneapolis how God has been raising up laborers through the campuses in Indianapolis. They widened our vision from the college campus to what God is doing around the world. There have been many students who have been discipled through Campus Outreach who are now living among other people groups in the nations of the world, coming alongside people to gently share this message of Jesus. An amazing story Brett shared was when he went with a team to bring bibles (the word of God) to a native tribe in Peru who had never heard the story of Jesus before. After handing out a bible to a man, the man read about Jesus and immediately asked, “Will you stay and teach us?” They went to another city to deliver more bible and share the message of Jesus, and the chief tribe of the people group said that they’ve always known there is a God who provides their sun, their food, shelter and water, but they’ve never known how to have a relationship with Him. The chief said he would deliver the bibles and the story of Jesus to his people immediately.”

Its amazing to think that all of the people in the world are souls. Souls hungry and longing to be in deep, intimate relationship with their creator. But all our souls live in different cities within different contexts. We were challenged to be creative, take risks, trust God, and pray for bigger things within our college campuses. I (Katie) had so much fun dreaming over our lunch break with freshman girls about creative ways to spend time with other girls in the dorms in the hopes of sharing our lives and Jesus with them.

I love the hearts of all the students who came, full of humility, faith, and desire to love others. We spent about 1.5 hours hearing all of them confess their struggle to die to selfish desires and live with vision and purpose while they are at college. Many of them shared their ideas and visions to give their lives away to love and serve their non-believing friends on the college campus. Many of them suggested moving into different apartments, houses, frats and sororities in different spots all over campus to reach different types of people. These students are ready to give up comfort and to go out into their context- the college campus- and live their lives among those who have never heard or seen the life of Jesus Christ.

(left: Bethel staff & students)

We were also blessed to have students and staff from Bethel and Northwestern College at our retreat to pray and learn. Its like being in a sport. You can’t play a good game without strategy, practice, team unity, and belief in what you are trying to accomplish. As Christians, we need to think strategically for how to love other people. We need to dream more about how to serve others by being interested in them, by caring about their lives, by having fun with them, and by sharing our own weaknesses and the gift of Christ with them. No Christian is perfect- that’s because we were and are all sinner’s in the first place! But am amazing, merciful savior has rescued us, and we want him to rescue many others- for God’s glory and their joy.
